Re: messin with my timing chain

yes that is the correct way but after that you need to rotate the crank 360* to bring #1 to tdc firing to drop in your dissy

Agreed. Dot to dot will put you at TDC, compression of #6. If you drop the distributor in and point it to #1 at that point it will be off by 180* at the distributor. Very common mistake.

Re: messin with my timing chain

First make sure you are even getting spark. Second make sure you are getting fuel (or even dump fuel or spray brake clean in the intake), still nothing...then.

Turn your engine to #1 TDC with both valves closed (stick something in the plug hole to get your top, whatever you stick in the hole must not knick your cylinder/piston or break off easly). Then make the ignition rotor point at the #1 cap nipple, this is the top of your compression stroke where you want the plug to fire...this is to get the engine running to set timing completely at like 10 BTDC (before top dead center).

If you don't want to remove the valve cover to make sure the valves are closed, then flip the plug wires or rotor exactly 180 degrees on the cap if it doesn't start.

Take your distributor out, turn the pointer on the rotor exactly 180 degrees from where it was, and drop it back in. Make sure to get the oil pump shaft lined up to where it drops all the way back in. It should start after that. Once you get it running, throw a timing light on it, and get the timing fine tuned, and should be good to go. Like Damon said, this is probably one of the most common mistakes. Did that several times when I was a teenager.
