exhaust smell/ choke cable

exhaust smell/ choke cable

my first question is in regard to a heavy exhaust smell when first start up and i can smell it inside the car to. i have no leaks pipes are welded, and collectors and header bolts are tight..what would cause that?

my second question is in regard to i have an edelbrock 600 cfm carb on a 305. i have no electric choke or manual choke hooked up. does it matter if i do or dont? it starts up fine after 2 pumps of gas pedal. should i get a manual chock cable?
