Re: Oil help
Welcome to TGO!
To help yourself to decide... How many miles on on your motor, how has it been cared for, does it have a flat tappet hydraulic or a roller cam, hows the oil pressure, does it leak anywhere, what sort of driving do you do, what's the climate like, when and how often will you be driving it, I'll stop there.
A safe bet is to always use a good name brand fossil based multi vis ie. 10/30 etc. oil that is compatible with the age of your motor and or the type of cam that it has. If it's a high mileage motor (75K+) there are also brands that offer additives for the seals. I however, cannot attest to their benifit.
I would not suggest that you start or convert to the use of synthetic's unless the previous owner had done so, shortly after breaking the motor in (if it's not the original motor). My experience is that this leads to leaks.
Did the previous owner supply you with a maintenance history? If so, what brand did he / she use? If not, start your own maintenace program with quality products of your choice.
Good luck and welcome aboard!

Re: Oil help
right now use any major brand 10w30 , dont run it low on oil . then talk with friends , mechanics , and search forum . myself i use a 50-50 blend of syn. and reg. oil , "major brand name" . for regular street use any major brand is o.k. . do a little research and decide .
Re: Oil help
Thanks for the help,I don't know what the mileage on the engine is since it's been rebuilt, but the odometer reads 350,000.
I'll go with a well known name brand 10w30,really all I need it for at the time is for a 350+km trip to get it home.
And though slightly off topic , what is the little switch located under the shifter for?

Re: Oil help
I use conventional 10/30 in winter and 10/40 in summer on my `88 Iroc 383 TPI. Are you talking about a switch on the console? If so, it may be the one that opens the rear hatch. If you are driving it home that far, you may want to put it up on a rack at a Jiffy Lube or Econo Lube and look it over and have them change the oil and filter, lube it and check the fluid level in the rear end, check belts and hoses. Whats it cost? $35 or so? That`s all I pay here. No, I do not recommend that they do any work on your car other than change the oil and filter, just check it out before you hit the road.

Re: Oil help
if your talking about the slide switch between the window switches on the console , its the remote switch for the hatch . only works with the ign. sw. off . [ you don't want to open it at 65mph ] if you want to open it with ign. sw. on , you need the key . good luck and welcome to 3rd. gen. .

Re: Oil help
I don't know how much time i'll have tomorrow before I take off , but I do know the oil need's a changin and that the fan belt is rubbing , also after the purchase ,the day pass to get it home and the money for fuel is going to leave me rather shy on the cash side.
As for the switch I know the hatch one you guy's are talking about and that's not the one ,it's a few inch's above it ,real small less then quarter of an inch in length with a small red light above it , it's located to the right of the part that says where you move the stick for gear's.
I was thinking that it might be for overdrive cuss ,correct me if im wrong ,but wasn't overdrive a option on the 84's?
Also if it whould help I chould post a picture of the switch in question tomorrow when I get home and access to a digicam.

Re: Oil help
Sounds like it may be a fan switch the previous owner may have added. Make sure you know if it is for the fan or not before you drive it away, don`t need to "smoke" the engine on the way home.
