Car Wont start

Hi I just bought an 89 Camaro and it started up many times and after I drove the car home after a 45min drive the car would not start. The guy who I bought the car from said sometimes the car wont start when it is in park and I have to drop to neutral and it will start, but now nothing will work. I am thinking it is the starter but Im not sure. When I turn the ignition nothing happens and I notice that a red light all the way on the left hand side turns on. Thats all that happens. It is not the battery because the fan and the lights come on and we tried to give it a jump. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know thanx

Re: Car Wont start

Your neutral safety switch is going south.

Replace it or short the yellow and purple wire together to bypass it

If you go this route make sure you are in park or neutral. If you are in drive and start the starter will launch the car forward and put alot of stress on your car.

It is not that bad, if you go this way. I fabricated my own shifter so I had to go this direction since I had no safety switch.

Is the neutral safety switch easy to replace and where are the yellow and purple wires located?

It's not hard. The switch is located on the lower portion of the automatic shifter. There is a connector going into it. Out of that connector are 6 wires I think the two biggest ones are purple and yellow. If those are not connected the car will not start. The rest of the wires are for back up lights and such.

On a 5spd, the colors are the same for the clutch safety switch. You cannot start the car if the wires are not shorted to each other. You press in the clutch pedal, the pedals hits a blade switch, the switch connects the wires so you can start the car.
