Check Engine Light, Point me in the write direction!!! PLEASE!!!!

ok here's the deal. I just bought a 1985 Camaro Sport Coupe on August 6th. I had an oil change done, because when i first bought the car, the oil was turning black. Also, when i first bought the car, the battery was dead so we had to get it jumped off. So when i had the oil change done (about a week after buying the car), the people checked for my two air filters and found that i didn't have any. After i bought and put those in, the check engine light was still on. I have noticed that when i push the gas pedal, it takes about 3 to 5 seconds for the car to accelerate more. I'm guessing that it's a fuel pump clogging up or something. but can anyone point me in the right direction? I went to try and get a free engine diagnostic done at both Autozone and Advanced Auto, but they both said that my car was too old.

Get a jumper wire or paper clip and jump the two top right termials on your ALDL. This will put the ECm in daignostic mode and the check engine light will blink in a pattern. It will tell you waht diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the fault memory. one blink followed by two blinks is code 12. Code 12 is normal and you will always have it. two blinks followed by one is code 21, and 4 followed by 3 is 43 and so on. Each code will blink 3 times. You'll have to find a table explaining the DTCs that is appropriate for your year and eninge. It will point you in the direction you need to go. But remember, DTCs will get you in the zip code, but they don't give you the address. i.e., an EGR code does not necessarily mean you must replace the EGR valve.

DLV pretty much covered it all. Just make sure not to start the car with the two terminals connected.

Sorry to resurface this thread but what happens if you do? I turned on my car once forgetting to remove my obd1 reader.
