where should the rotor button be pointing

without even mentioning the dist. cap when i put my motor at 0* ,where should the rotor be pointing as in relation to my motor? i mean pointing right at no.1 plug hole ,a little before .a little after?

A little after the #1 cap post, but I'm not sure it's so much as to be seen easily.
By that, I mean the center lines of the post and the rotor.
If the rotor is completely off the post, it's too far.

Assuming that you have the engine set up at #1 firing, and you are certain it is exactly there because you verified the #1 compression stroke by checking for compression and you observed the piston and NOT the timing mark on the crank damper:

The factory location for the #1 terminal on the cap is just to the driver's side of straight ahead. The position of the #8 terminal (nest in the firing order) is an equal distance to the pass side of straight ahead.

So, you want the rotor to be pointing somewhere between straight ahead and just to the driver's side of straight ahead, when the #1 cyl is at TDC on its compression stroke.

The engine will run no matter what terminal the rotor points to, as long as the plug wires are plugged in so that they get spark when it's their turn; but if you put it together like the factory did, then your wires will behave in a neat orderly fashion and look the least like a bird's nest, and pre-made stock sets will fit correctly.
