rough idle
Hey guys I need some help. I've got an 88 iroc with an L98 and it idles rough. The engine rpm varies at idle speed and there is some hesitation when you acclerate slowly. I don't have a check engine light and once the car is past idle it accelerates normally. When I drove the car today and looked under the hood I smelled gas. Where could the gas leak be coming from as I have had the car for 7 years and have never had a fuel leak problem. I had a new motor put in the car about 3 years ago and there were no fuel leak problems before or after the install.

Re: rough idle
Assuming your new motor is still TPI...
If you smell gas under the hood, check the fuel lines where they connect to the fuel rail (toward the front of the block). Also, check along the fuel rails and the fuel pressure regulator (at the back of the intake manifold).
Also, when one of my injectors was sticking open, I could smell fuel under the hood since the injector was constantly dumping fuel into the cylinder.
Hope this helps.

Re: rough idle
thanks I'll check and yes the motor still is the stock tpi. I also heard that when one of the fuel injectors goes bad there is a ticking or a clicking noise, is that true?

Re: rough idle
Not necessarily... when mine was stuck open, it didn't make any noise.
FYI - You can test your injectors to see if they are electrically ok by checking them with an ohm meter. They should all be close to each other in readings... somewhere between 11 and 16 ohms.
Hope this helps.

Re: rough idle
my car has a wondering/rough idle , and i have a tick so does that mean i have a bad injector ?
Re: rough idle
I had a rough idle problem with my 89 Formula and all i did to fix it was adjust the throttle position sensor a bit. Probably a temporary fix but it worked none the less. Saved $30 bucks for now. Steve

Re: rough idle
There are a couple things I would try given your symptoms.
First is to clean the IAC motor pintle. This is really easy - just get some fuel injection safe intake cleaner and remove the rubber intake duct right before the throttle body. Put the red nozzle stick thing on the can and squirt into the holes in between the throttle blades on the throttle body. That should help clean up the idle control passage.
Next thing that I would try is to check and see if your canister purge circuit is working properly. Since you said you smelled gas I thought this might come from the purge canister if it wasnt working. Disconnect and plug the vacuum lines that go to the purge canister (its behind the passenger side headlight). See if plugging them helps your idle.
