Engine knock?
I took a small video of my engine starting up and someone told me it has a knock. It was taken in my garage with just shorties and a y pipe. The cam is a edelbrock rpm cam, the timing is also very far off and the carb isnt tuned right yet.

Re: Engine knock?
That link took me to a .jpg not a video.
I have a knock at startup, too. Mechanic told me it was a rod bearing, but I'm not so sure. The car runs AWESOME after startup. The knock only lasts about half a second. I guess whatever is knocking gets some oil on it and shuts up after the engine turns a few times.
I would like to see your video.

Yea, .jpg
I like your Capri. I always liked the body effects on those vs the mustang of the era. Better nose clip (chin spoiler?) and nifty ram air hood.

Re: Engine knock?
Could it just be because my timing is so far off its not even funny? and nothing is really tuned yet?

Re: Engine knock?
OK, my knock doesn't even compare to that. Makes me feel better. It's hard to tell where that is coming from with a video. Get a screwdriver (or better yet a stethoscope) and put it on each of the bolts on your valve covers. If everything sounds ok, try it on your oil pan. You might not find out exactly where it's coming from, but at least you will know if it is top end or bottom end ... then again with a knock that pronounced, you be able to tell just by listening without any instruments. Good luck!
[edit] Just reflected on my reply, and I would like to add that you really can't tell from the video if it is a knock for sure. The sound is kinda muffled fromt he video. It might just be the way your car is cammed? Or timing? I'd get a mechanic to look at it ... but is does sound eerily like a knock. How does it run?[/edit]

Re: Engine knock?
Well that was the first startup in like 2 years. It sounds mean but I'm not sure how it runs. The cam is only a edelbrock rpm cam with proform gears for timing. I'm wondering if it has to do with my timing being very far off at the distributor.
----------
What exactly causes engine knock? and by the sound of how loud it is wouldnt it be something else other than a knock?

Re: Engine knock?
could be piston slap to....have you had it fully warmed up yet? heat makes the pistons expand and grow, usually making slap go away.
I have seen pistons be way off on the size there marked for causing slap. Keith black usually are the brand who do it most often. its 50/50 with them, when there right there one of the best brands around.
not saying its piston slap but you never know.

Re: Engine knock?
Forged pistons usually have the wide clearance that gives them a slap.
This sounds more serious. Something is tapping that shouldn't be. Sounds too big to be valvetrain (a start up with the valve covers removed will identify that quickly).
If you don't hear it more with valve covers off, get a buddy to start it while you're under, and listen with a stethoscope to the pan. If you hear more, pull the oil pan. Something if flopping around.

Re: Engine knock?
So theres no chance its due to the exhaust being open and possibly echoing in my closed garage, and the timing being off and stuff?

Re: Engine knock?
So should I pull the engine back out now? What am I looking for as for a bearing being broken. How much damage could there be? Worst and best case scenarios?

Re: Engine knock?
I'd pull the engine and check the bottom end.
Best case - loose rod cap or something flopping around in bottom end
worst - too tight bearing, already spun and ruined the crank journal there

Re: Engine knock?
Someone mentioned to me because I told them the engine wasnt fired up in almost 2 years that I might need to prime the oil system? I didnt do this and I probably should have, maybe the bearing needs to get oil on it. That start up was all of 3 seconds, not nearly enough time to get oiled. I did a oil change but thats still not great.

It ran before like 2 years ago but I did do an oil change a couple months ago and the car only ran for that video.

Re: Engine knock?
I would pull the oil pan and do an extensive look at the main and rod bearings/caps. That engine was shaking like hell so I doubt its a timing issue. Whats the oil pressure like? High? Low? how did it run before the car sat for two years? Two years isn't a long time to sit IMO.

Re: Engine knock?
I dont know how it ran before Ive only owned it for a year almost. The timing is very off I know that for a fact and the engine does have a RPM cam with a 112lsa so its not too rough but noticeable. I guess I'll just pull it and get it over with.
