Proper idle setting

What is the proper idle setting (in Rpm) for a 1992 camaro with a 3.1 V6? Mine is currently running at 1500 warm. Aside from the idle screw at the the throttle body, how do you go about adjusting it?

Re: Proper idle setting

My 3.1 V6 idles at about 600 rpms. I believe 600-800 is the desired range. The idle screw on the throttle body is set from the factory and is NOT intended to be adjusted. If your engine is not idling where it should be, then you most likely have a problem elsewhere. I would start by cleaning the IAC (Idle Air Control) passage in the throttle body. Yes, you'll have to buy a throttle body gasket kit because you'll have to removed the throttle body to clean the passage but it most likely needs to be done. Over time, dirt particles can build up in the passage and affect the pintle on the IAC which can allow it to not fully close or adjust properly. You might also look into just replacing the IAC. As I recall, the IAC is a fairly inexpensive item and is fairly simple to replace. You could also have a vacuum leak but that typically causes an erratic idle and not necessarily a high idle.
