Reground stock cam. Iron distrib. gear okay?
Hi guys, I have a reground roller cam that was done with a stock core. Doesn't the stock type roller cam have an iron gear pressed on it, so I can use a regular iron distributor gear? Or do I have to get a special factory melonized gear? I always get mixed answers. I know the aftermarket billet roller cams need the composite or bronze gears, but I thought the stock ones take a regular iron gear.
I am using a small cap electronic HEI dist. with a gear that came from a car that I'm pretty sure was flat tappet in the junkyard.
Thanks
Steve

Wow, do people still regrind cams? You should be ok with a stock gear.

Apparently. I bought the cam new on this board, based on specs. Its around 0.495/0.535, 224/234. 114 LSA. A good amount of lift and duration to make some power but a wide LSA to keep the O2 happy. When I got the cam, I could tell it was a regrind from the surface finish of the lobes, vs. what something from comp would look like.

I'll take a close up pic when I get home. The finish is fine, but you can tell it's a regrind. It's not as good of a finish as an OE cam lobe would have. Also it has GM OE cam #s on it. I did mic it and the gross lift factors out to what the cam card said. Should be a good stick

Yes people still regrind stock cams. I had mine reground to ZZ9 specs by Chet Herbert Cams. This was 10 years ago. Save some money this way.
