Speedometer + transmission issue
Speedometer + transmission issue
Hey.
Thanks to those that responded to my last problem. It ended up being a combination of things, including fuel injectors, fuel pump, etc etc. Ended up costing me $944! That, after the mechanic knocked 8 hours off of the labor. Yikes.
The basics: '91 RS, automatic, 6 cyl.
Anyway, a few days ago I merging onto the highway, when my speedometer suddenly started acting strange. The needle was shaking ever so slightly. By the time I got to class, however, it was jumping back and forth wildly. Later that night, it stopped moving all together (and over the last couple of days has gone back to jumping all over the place).
The big issue is, the moment the speedometer started acting up, I started noticing a kind of hiccup (maybe a slip?) in my transmission while I was driving. It was pretty consistent. This was the first day and a half. Then, I decided to switch from overdrive to drive, and this made the issue less noticeable, although I can still feel it slipping or something every once in a while.
My question is, could the issue with the speedometer be causing the issue with the transmission, or is it more likely the reverse? My dad thinks that the transmission must be going bad...but I thought I had read somewhere that the speed sensor or something along those lines could cause the tranny to act up. I'm certainly hoping that's the case, because that $944 drained my bank account!
Any ideas/opinions, please send them my way! Thanks. =)

Re: Speedometer + transmission issue
Well i know that my z28 has had that same proble when i first got it. I would be diving down the freeway and you feel little jumps in the transmission, I work at a chevrolet dealership and so i took it over to the service dept. and they told me that my speed sensor had gone out on the transmission and that yes it would be causing the tranny to act up due to the electronics. So i replaced it a week or so later and it cured that problem. And i paid about $70 bucks for that sensor and it's not to hard to put in.
If ya need anything else hit me up.

Cool, thanks for the the response. I'll see about getting my car to the shop and having them check the speed sensor. Just want to make sure I don't get suckered into a new tranny when I don't need one.
Will driving around with this little jump in the transmission harm anything? I'd imagine it might, but I don't know much about transmissions.
