Best cam for me? Specs inside

1986-00 style block, 1pc rear seal 2 bolt mains - (No mechanical Fuel Pump Provisions)---Nodular Iron Crankshaft---Powdered Metal Connecting Rods---Hypereutectic Pistons---9.4:1 COmpression Ratio--Roller Camshaft - Intake Lift - .414'', Exhaust Lift - .428'', Intake Duration @ .050'' - 191, Exhaust Duration @ .050'' - 196, Lobe Centerline - 111Vortec Cylinder Heads - 64cc, 1.94'' Intake, 1.50'' Exhaust--------------------------------------------------------------------------The cam in it is making ~260horsepower in an emissioned, no header vehicle circa 1998-2000I have a 1989 IROC Camaro 305tbi with all options including the 20lb sunshade. guessing its ~3500-3600lbs.I have the 700r4, i want to use stock converter and stock rear gears (2.73?) and want to end up with 300horsies after tuning and headers, exhaust, 93 octane. Any advice on a roller cam? Any advice in general?
Oh yeah, also putting in throttle body injection(holley/edelbrock)

Read that article. If you notice at the top of the article there is a link to Part II where they try a different cam. All in all they make 400 hp with a 92 octane vortec headed 350. I think you said you wanted to use TBI though, so you'll probably see a decrease in performance if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Best cam for me? Specs inside

Sweet. So the real question is...with that cam will I have to get my stuff machined? how much does that usually run? Is there anything less aggressive for the street, keep in mind im not looking to use a new converter (i must save my 10 bolt rear, 400 will eat it =/ )More cam suggestions please.!
Sleeper car!

Re: Best cam for me? Specs inside

iroc,
I'm currently in the process of putting a ZZ3 cam in a new GM L31 (Vortec) longblock for my pickup. It would be really nice to end up about 300 rwhp, although that's probably a stretch for me, since it currently dyno's at 253 rwhp (exact same engine/cam specs you list above for your current engine).

You will not have to get anything machined. Just get the Crane p/n 10309 spring & retainer kit and you'll have lift capability up to about .550.
I'd strongly discourage you from using the Hotcam if you want to keep your stock converter; the vehicle will be a dog on the low end. I'd go with a cam like the GM ZZ3, GM 845, Crane 227, Comp 501, Comp 502...... Lot's of possibilities better suited for your intent than the Hotcam. In fact, with 2.73 gears (you really should change those!), a Comp 500 (206/212/112) might be a wise choice.

With a stock converter, the car will be a dog down low with the ZZ3/ZZ4 cam.

About all you can handle with stock converter is about 255-ish adv duration. Getting 300 RWHP with that restriction will require spray, although you might get close to 300 GFWHP.

Re: Best cam for me? Specs inside

well I was looking for power similar to the feel of the 300 flywheel horse LT1 etc, or maybe a little better. I don't want a dog at the low end...but saying those will be a dog defeats the purpose. What will not be a dog? What is it I'm aiming for five7kid?
links and model numbers would be great.PLEASE HELP! :0

The "Budget TBI" on the TBI forum ( https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...i-buildup.html the link is acting up for some reason - just go look at the sticky at the top of the TBI forum). And get a 2000 or so stall converter. Mine stalls at 2500, it's just fine off the line around town with 2.93 gears.

Did I mention I out-run the 2000 LS1/auto Camaros they have out at the track?

[quote=five7kid;3478298]With a stock converter, the car will be a dog down low with the ZZ3/ZZ4 cam...
Not true at all. Where is this "opinion" coming from?
I've driven otherwise stock LT1 4200 lb ImpalaSS's with both the ZZ3 cam and the LT4 Hotcam. While the Hotcam left a lot to be desired for in-town driving, the ZZ3 was as strong down low as the stock cam except when the converter was locked around 1200 rpm in 4th gear
In a 3500-3600 3rd Gen and with intake runner length obviously longer than the 3" of the LT1 manifold, the ZZ3, Comp 501, or Comp 500 would perk the car up even if he insists on staying with the stock converter and gears. With that said, if it were my car, I'd be addressing performance in this order:
1. gears
2. converter
3. cam
If you think you'll never change the gears or converter, then again, go with the Comp 500 cam.

ZZ3 cam is not a dog down low!

Update on my "project" mentioned in the thread above:
My truck with the new Vortec longblock and ZZ3 cam is running as of yesterday, and I can honestly say I've lost NOTHING at low rpm's versus the stock cam. Even with the old 400 lb longblock sitting in the bed, several roll-ons from 1200 rpm in high gear with the torque converter locked revealed no compromise in low-end grunt. I expect it to get even better when I get the PCM retuned for the cam.
