Machine Work Prices - Are mine high?

Hey guys, I just got back from a reputable shop her in Florida and I have a quote for what I need done. The shop I checked out has been building engines since the 80s including nitrous slat-flat motors, stock car motors, and everything in between. They seem knowledgeable.

Remove and replace installed cam bearings (for machining) - $55
0 deck the block - $200
Balance rotating assembly (full forged) - $300
Assemble pistons/rods/crank - $48
Re-drill intake holes (using new intake with older style bolt angle heads) - $65
Full assembly of long block (including intake, oil pan etc)- $500
Complete cleaning of the block - $75

I dont have the tools or space to do this myself, so I am depending on a shop to assemble most of it for me.

What do you guys think?

Yep, that's fair.
You aren't getting the block bored?

Re: Machine Work Prices - Are mine high?

Thanks for the reply.

The block is an aftermarket (new block from GM Perf.) I bought already machined and ready to go. I just couldn't get one already 0 decked...

That sounds a bit expensive. Also sounds backwards - what intake are we talking about here?

Re: Machine Work Prices - Are mine high?

I'm using a newer intake that has the angled center intake bolts. I am using older-style heads where all 8-bolts are the same angle. The guy said that was the only quote he wasn't sure about since it isn't requested very often. He said it might be higher than what the actual charge may be.

Re: Machine Work Prices - Are mine high?

This is what I was charged just this month for my machine work.

Cam bearings - $45
Balance - $190
Clean block - $75

That's all I have that both of us had done.

The block actually ended up getting cleaned twice, second time free, due to clearancing.

Thats a good deal on the balance. The lowest I have seen here and in N.C. is $250.

Re: Machine Work Prices - Are mine high?

I have had balancing cost as little as $100, and as much as $300. I guess it all depends how close it is to start, and therefore how time consuming it is for the shop.

Re: Machine Work Prices - Are mine high?

That could be. I bought an all forged Eagle rotating assembly.
The rods weren't even touched. Couldn't really tell about the crank. 6 of the slugs had to be ground down. The balancer was drilled into as was the flexplate. The weight range of the slugs ended up being 027 - 028.
I figure that $190 was a pretty good deal.
