It's Alive!

Well I finally cranked my new engine today. The good news, it cranked and no leaks so far! Here are a few problems I have ran across. At first my carb bowls were over filling and flooding the engine (electric fuel pump) but I solved that. My too main concerns at the moment are my oil pressure is around 60 psi at 2k rpm or a little higher. This is a standard volume oil pump. I'm running 10w30 VR1, mechanical o.p. gauge. My clearances on the rod bearings were good-a lil tight (.020-.025) and my main bearing clearances were looser (.030-.040). What would cause this high of pressure?

My next problem is that once I get it running it dies out after about 15-20 seconds of running. I screwed the idle screw in so that it would idle high when I cranked it. Does this sound like the bowls are running out of gas? I have my fuel pressure around 5lbs. This is a 700DP that I rebuilt. I would like to get this resolved so I can break in my camshaft without having to keep running it for 20 seconds at a time.

I hope your bearings aren't .020-.025"/.030-.040".

You should be able to tell if you're running out of gas by opening the bowl sight plugs. Does your fuel pressure stay up when the engine dies?

haha yeah a typo on that one, i left out a 0 in those numbers.

I'm using the factory in tank electric pump with bypass regulator. I've been keeping the flow at 5 psi. Thinking back after it shuts off, it'll crank back up after a few minutes (battery was low and I think my starter is too weak). I'm going to give her another try tomorrow after work.

I really can't see it running out of fuel at idle with a consistant 5 psi if your float levels are set properly.. are they?

I wouldnt think I could drain both bowls in 10-15secs of running at a high idle but then again ya never know. At first the front bowl was set too high and it was flooding and I think my back bowl was a little low. I adjusted them yesterday and I'll try it again this afternoon when I get home.

ah... i know what your problem is... i assume you are using the electric intake pump... when you turn the key you hear it prime? i am betting you do if not it is... but after that how are you keeping the FP running? do you have the oil pressure sending unit in the block and plugged into the factory harness? no thats your problem

I tapped the relay into an ignition on wire so whenever I turn on the ignition the pump turns on. I'm running a mechanical o.p. gauge as well.

I tried today but my starter isn't turning the car over enough to start. The battery has 12 volts so I'm thinking I might need a high torque starter.
