Got any recommendations for headers for a stock 92 bird 305 tbi(with chip)

 

Since you're in AB still (right?) You don't have to worry about air tubes and whatnot. Are they still there and functional?
I got the Hedmann 68470 headers and y-pipe 18470 (one of those part #'s is wrong I think....) at MOPAC. $150 each I think it was.
The hooker 2460 is the other main option, comes with a y-pipe, but it's a bit more $$. Check the sticky in the exhaust forum for the low-down on your choices.

 

Hooker 2460HKR don't come with a y-pipe, but a (crappy) $US150 y-pipe is available.

It's the Hooker 2055HKR that come with a y-pipe. Best headers out there, IMHO.

 

How many would I need, what would be a time frame for a mechanic to install. I know a bit about cars, but only in the stock version, lol, the mods is where I get a litttle lost

 

For one car? You will need one (1) set of headers (comes with the left and right header), and one (1) y-pipe kit. If you want to call it a kit. It may come with a few clamps and whatnot.

Oooh, i'd plan on 3hrs labor, at ~$80/hr. That'd be a minimum i'd guess. Check with Carline muffler in the NE. I can dig up the guys name, but he installed my y-pipe, since it needed to be cut and modified (add 3" pipe instead of 2.5", and tweak to fit in the SFC's).
That cost me $180 I think, including $50 for the mandrel bend and pipe. I had already installed the headers though.

So far, I have good things to say about
the Hedman #68481 "Shorties." They are
outfitted with the EGR air injection untop
of the header primaries.

The only difference between the 68470's
& the 68481's is one has the AIR injection,
and one does not.

I believe the headers and Y-pipe ran
about $485.00 and it bolted up with no
modification.

Ive heard nothing but good things from

I agree with 88_SC_305. I have the edelbrock TES headers/y-pipe and its worked well for me. You can expect around a 10 hp increase at the wheels.

 

Edelbrocks are one step above stock manifolds, while most everything else is a few steps ahead. I discuss header choices in my sticky post in the Exhaust forum.

If you insist on crippling your engine with Edelbrocks, at least get the ones made for a TPI engine. The TBI/LG4 headers are smaller and have a bad y-pipe compared to the TPI ones.

I'd recommend the Hooker's, 2055's or 2460's.

Go with Hooker 2460s. They have 1 5/8" primaries and 3" collectors. They flow very well and cost about $150 US. You will get more than 10 HP with a full exhaust change.

As I've said many, many times before, I don't consider them good at all. You'll have to spend money to have your stock y-pipe modified to fit them, and the stock y-pipe is terrible; or the alternative is the y-pipe that is available for them, which is overpriced and an underachiever. I don't understand why Hooker even offers them, and have even more trouble understanding why anyone would fall for their siren call "low price".

The 2055HKR's aren't perfect, but are a lot closer than anything else offered (possible exception: member Dyno Don's handmade offering).

10 HP gain is with no other changes (and probably conservative). The effect is multiplied if other changes are made. For instance, do the headers and cam swap for a 50 HP gain, but the same cam swap alone would only get you 20 HP because of the restrictive stock exhaust.

By the way, if you keep any of your stock LO3 exhaust, you'll still be underachieving.

 

No, my car has pipes, not a stock exhaust.

 

I'm talking about the parts attached to the engine (exhaust manifolds, they're typically called), the pipes coming off of the manifolds to the cat (commonly called the "y-pipe", because the two pipes "Y" into one and then into the cat), and the pipe that goes between the cat and muffler.

What's sticking out underneath the bumper doesn't impress me. The game's long over by then.

 

I know what u mean and the Y pipe is I assume... stock, I am not sure because the car is in storage right now. The 2055 are $795.00 including the y-pipe. I have a pretty stock 305 tbi bird and just wanted to know what the cam swap entailed in terms of price, work and what exactly must be done. You seem to have tons of experience so I will pick ur brain. lol.
