Tranny noises
Ok, so im driving home from Murrays, and my tranny starts making weird noises getting into first. Its an automatic, 7OOr4. It makes a big thump, and the car shakes when i hit the gas from a dead start. if i go sow from the start, it doesnt happen. Does anyone know what might be up? It sounds as if its coming from the gear box. It performs fine in every other gear. after it gets past first, its as if nothing is wrong.

Re: Tranny noises
not too bad to fix. You'll need two jacks or some way to jack the car up and then jack the tranny up. (i just got a cheap $18 one from walmart.
You can find a new one at any decent parts store. And don't get the stock one get one from energy suspension, they last longer.
Here is how i did it.
Jack the car up high and put jack stands under it so you can live to tell the story (i never do, but i never suggest it, my jack stands are too tall.)
Then put a jack under the tranny and jack it up until it touches it and then just a little more. best place i found was the latter part of the tail house. (just don't put it on anything breakable like the pan)
loosen and remove the transmission mount nut ( a single nut that is in the middle of the crossmember fyi:crossmember- the piece of steel going under the back of the tranny that has four bolts holding it on, two on each side.)
Then get a 15mm socket and carefully remove the 4 crossmember bolts. and do it carefully don't pull them out fast because mine got hot and if you zip them out you might break them.
then using a standard socket (forget which one) remove the other part of the transmission mount that is still connected to the transmission (assuming it broke in two) there are two (2) bolts.
-----here is where i did things different------
NOTE: check to see if the bolt supplied with your kit fits through the hole in the crossmember. usually they don't and you have to file it a little or somehow remove a SMALL amount of material to let the bolt fit.
clean all the gunk out of the threads of all the bolts
then using locktight (the red heavy duty, i used the paste stick) loosely attach the new trans mount to the the cross member.
then hold the crossmember up (and remembering the lock washers and washers ) loosely put the bolts in that hold the trans mount to the transmission (two bolts, use locktight)
then after cleaning the crossmember bolts and drying them, put lock tight on them and put them in carefully (DO NOT CROSS THREAD THEM) until tight or according to shop manual tq specs.
then fully tighten the trans mount bolts on the transmission (2 bolts) and tighten to spec or until snug remembering the material is alumn and soft.
Then tighten the trans mount bolt the connects the mount to the crossmember.
Then double check your work and proceed to first area with asphalt. Do two burnouts
okay that's optional
hope this help and was not too specific.

Re: Tranny noises
ha ha that happens to me no matter what. yesterday under my dad's truck, burn my arm twice on the exhaust. working on the camaro, slice my finger open on a bracket. work on the vibe and drop a brake drum on my foot. I just always assume i'll get hurt somehow. lol!
Good luck though. on a scale of 1-10 i would say it's a 2, right next to changing the air filter and really far away from an engine swap or worse... changing the fuel pump.

Re: Tranny noises
I hated changing the *&^%ing fuel pump. that was terrible. BTW, how much is a new mount?
