Comp Cams question

Can someone tell me if this will work for me? I bought the cam with the red arrow next to it. I have an older block that I have rebuilt. It is from a 77 truck. I am building a 350 tbi engine and I want to know if this cam will work with tbi. The heading below the cam I bought says computer controlled so I am not sure if I should have bought one of those instead.

Re: Comp Cams question

That means that the cams below that heading, are for computer-controlled engines.

No, the cam you bought is MOST DEFINITELY NOT for computer-controlled engines, at least not in stock trim with stock programming. However, you might be able to tune it, since you might be good at burning PROMs.

The cam one step less than that and set up for computers, the XE262H-14 (as you note, below the "computer-controlled" heading and therefore in the list you need to be in), is probably about all that the stock programming can tolerate, in a 350 with TBI. Would probably run pretty good in fact. But I think you'll have a mess on your hands with what you've got.

Re: Comp Cams question

I don't know what heads you are running but the intake has .477" lift and the exhaust has .480" lift. Might want to check your heads to make sure they can handle the lift.

Re: Comp Cams question

If I went carb instead of TBI then would I be ok with the one I bought? I am not saying I am going carb but I am just curious and trying to see the big picture.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Yes, carb would be easiest to tune for. What heads are on the engine?

Re: Comp Cams question

I have dart iron eagle s/s heads http://www.dartheads.com/manager/upl...IRON%20SBC.pdf
But I had them machined and ported and they now have 2.02/1.60 valves installed

Re: Comp Cams question

I am going to use the heads above. I am planning on using tbi. I am going to add headers and true dual exhaust. I have a fourth gen rear with 3.73 gears I might use. Auto transmissinon. 2 questions. I am planning on having a custom chip burned. So I would rather not spend money on a new cam if I can get the one I have to work. Does anyone know if it will work or should I get one that is under the computer controlled section in the above table. Also 1989GTATransAM mentioned to check to see if the heads can handle the lift. How can I check this?

Re: Comp Cams question

it may be cheaper to just buy a different cam... as a custom chip to make that cam run correctly... is going to take a bit of hands on work... which is lots of $$$$$$... where as a new cam will only be around 260-289... and NO a aftermarket chip company probably wont do a very good job if they would even try

Re: Comp Cams question

To answer your question it looks like the heads will handle the lift for the cam listed. The list for the flow for .500" lift. That is more than the lift of the cam that you specified.

Hard to read but maybe the max lift for the heads is .520" with a single spring and .620" lift with a double spring. I would get ahold of Dart to verify that. Usally Dart is very specific about the max lift of the valves but that chart leaves something to be desired.
