Will this make 500hp?

I have a 11:1 406, etec 200 heads, super victor Jr. intake, HP750 carb. The cam is a comp cams extreme energy street solid roller, 242/248 @.050 .570/.576 lift on 110LSA along with matching valvetrain. Engine is balanced and uses arp hardware. Any guesses?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Will this make 500hp?

Given that all of the other supporting parts are up to the task (EXHAUST), probably so. At least once or twice. Maybe more, if you're a good short block builder.

Re: Will this make 500hp?

I had a short rod 383 with a cam having around .550" lift and it made around 500 hp on premium pump gas and 10:1 compression. Single plane intake with an 850 DP. Well worked over camel heads with big valves. Totally stock bottom end with factory cast pistons.

It was enough to push my car into the high 11's. I raced it for 2 years before throwing a rod and destroying the engine.

Re: Will this make 500hp?

Sounds good then. I just bought a no option 84 sport coupe I'm putting the 406/700R4 and 3500 converter. I'd like to see high 6's in the 1/8th for some bracket racing and some weekend street duty.

Re: Will this make 500hp?

Then ditch the 700R4 and install a TH350 or a TH400. You don't need an OD for the track or weekend street duty. It also has a poor gear spread from 1-2.

It has everything you need to make 500HP. I would have tightened up the LSA to 106*, maybe 108*.

I've thought about it but there's a couple cruises in other towns I'd maybe like to take the car to.

I have a powerglide core in the shed, I've thought about using it but the car will probably weigh over 3K????? Maybe just get a higher stall to get the car moving?

The carb made 530hp with the 351W I have in my mustang with no signs of air or fuel problams. That being said I now use a 950HP on my mustang and the car does pull better everywhere.

Alot of the parts I'm using for the 406 are recycled parts(except for the heads and valvetrain) and actually it's been alot of fun putting the 406 together. Thanks for the responses guys.

So? My race weight is just under 3100 pounds and I use a 1.76 powerglide. My converter stalls just under 6000 rpm. With a high HP engine, you don't need the extra torque multiplication of lower gears. My engine idles around 1000 rpm and pushing the throttle slightly will get the car moving. The best converter stall is determined after the engine has been put on a dyno.

Not all powerglides are the same. There were a lot of changes over the years. From a mix and match of parts, a good strong powerglide isn't hard to build. Stay away from the L6 1.82 geared ones. The gears are very weak. The V8 1.76 geared glides are better.

If you feel you "need" an OD tranny, use a 200-4R. Roughly the same gear ratios as the TH350 and has an OD.

Re: Will this make 500hp?

what about one of those gear vendors kits for TH400/TH350's that give you extra 3 gears or something liek that?

Re: Will this make 500hp?

Stephen, one other question befoer I install the cam. When I called summit I was going to order their regular 330.00 CC solid roller lifters. The salesman made a suggestion to try a set of lunati's instead and save 50.00 at the same time. So I did as the couple times I've used lunati I've had good luck. When I opened the box the salesman sold me a set of horizontal link bar lifters with the springs. They are light and I guess their designed for cam swaps without removing the intake. I called lunati and he suggests the vertical but in my application they will be fine since I don't have alot of lift.

Do you have any experience with these?
