installing new cloyes timing chain and gears while i wait for pistons and rods to come back from the machine shop.

when i removed the original gear and chain there was a slight wear mark on the cam retaining plate (if that is what it is called) but it spun freely.

with the new set when i bolt the gear to the cam theris definetly interfearence. i put marker on it and its in the same place os the original.

ok so is there supposee to be slight interferance and it wears in ? or do i surface grind the cam retaining plate to some specified clearence. directions say make sure its not hitting the block, witch it isnt.

The timing chains for roller cams are different than those for flat tappet cams. I assume you got the right one since you can't physically interchange the cam gears between them- the bolt pattern on the front of the cam is different and won't line up.

There should NOT be any interference fit. With the cam gear bolted on the front of the cam you should still be able to rotate the cam easily by hand (assuming you don't have the valvetrain assembled and working against vavle spring tension).

 

Check the boss straight up from the cam bore. Ther are three of them and you want to look at the center one. On a lot of blocks the top of the boss has to be ground for a double roller chain to clear. See if there are any shiny wear spots.
