car wont rev up???
Hi, I have an 89 rs and it has had a 350 swap. recently rebuilt bored 40 over bigger cam and lifter kit. stock crank and stock rods. late model heads.
MY QUESTION is it will not rev up more than a 1/4 into the throttle. I had the same problem before I rebuilt it. I thonght it had a cracked head (and was right) but after the rebuild it still doing the same thing. The car sounds mean as hell when ideling. but try giving it gas and it acts like its getting to much gas or not enough gas. I have been told to check the map sensor (not it) Replaced the distributer (not it) replaced the fuel filter (not it). I really need help, any suggestions will be nice. its been over a year now that I have drove the car.
It was runing fine one day and the next its been doing this, I could start down the road in it before I rebuilt it and it would start sounding like it was gonna stall and I could just hold down the throttle and and after it got past a certain rpm it would finally speed up and kind of do ok. at the time this was my only car and had to make it work to get back and forth to work. I have tried everything I know to do so If any can help PLEASE DO SO?

Re: car wont rev up???
i've checked for vacuum leaks can't find any.
----------
The check engine light is on but its because the smog pump is not hooked up. other than that no codes.
----------
Anyone have any suggestions I'm open to try anything

are you running the stock computer? it could be a mix of alot of things, you stock computer expects a 305 engine when you have a 350 engine. it also expects a smaller cam when you have a bigger cam. and if you check engine light is on, its not going to run properly.

Have you checked the injectors? It may also help to know if it's getting too much or too little fuel. Test this by revving it up just to the edge of where it wants to die and keep it there, just where it's barely sputtering. Have somebody watch the exhaust while you do this. If it's excessively rich there will be black smoke and even raw fuel smell.

Yes its the stock computer. I drove the car a year before having any problems. So its not the computer. Also it started acting this way before I installed the bigger cam. It started before I rebuilt the engine. (this problem is why I rebuilt the engine in the first place) and the check engine light is on because the smog pumps not connected. Thats the only reason its on. But Thanks...

Re: car wont rev up???
I have not checked the injectors I will do so soon. It does not smoke at all. I have smelt a little richness in the pipes but, I do believe its caused from the valves not being adjusted just right. (which we cant get right cause of the revving prob) thanks for the suggestions.... Anyone else feel free to help me out...??? thanks in advance. I'm lost, I've done everything I can think of except change it from fuel injected to carb to see if thats the prob. I have a Holley 660 I have rebuilt to try on it but I want to leave it TBI.

Re: car wont rev up???
thanks for all your help. I feel so stupid, the only obvious thing to check was the problem, I changed the fuel filter a few weeks ago and it was a little dirty but the little light didnt come on upstairs until yesterday. DUH.... check the TBI I rebuilt it yesterday and it runs great. I dont know who came up with the idea you got to upgrade the chip, injectors, and ESC (probably someone from a dealership just to get someone to spend unnessary cash) But to let you guys know its not a have to. I mean i have a 350 .30 over with a big cam performer intake 1/2 TBI spacer/adapter and it runs just fine. No fuel starvation no richness perfect. Thanks again

Re: car wont rev up???
As odd as it sounds check your battery and alternator, I had both a bad battery and alternator and when i mashed the pedal the car wouldnt go higher then 3500 rpms, but it started fine.
