Using Sportsman II heads w/ centerbolt valve covers. Do I really have to grind perime
Hi guys, I have installed Sportsman IIs I just got back from the machine shop on my 327. I have been using centerbolt valve covers, and would like to continue using them. However, the Sportsman II installation instructions say I have to machine down the perimeter bolt bosses if I am to use centerbolt valve covers. I really do not want to do this -- has anyone run Sportsman heads w/ centerbolt valve covers, but not machined the perimeter bolt bosses down? I will go buy perimeter bolt valve covers if I really have to, but I really just want to use what I already have.
THanks!

Yes you really have to do that, its in the instructions for a reason. If you dont, the valve cover will not seal and you will get oil all over the engine. We went thru that BEFORE it was in the directions.

After taking a look at the centerbolt valve covers, and the heads, it is now very obvious to me why they won't seal w/o grinding. In the trash go the centerbolt covers. I bought a new set of perimeter bolt covers. I like the center bolt design better, but I am sure as heck not grinding on these heads and ruining them for when I want to use larger dia. valve springs, and perimeter bolt covers must be used, later on.
Thanks for the answer, I appreciate it
