Setting Timing

1986 Camaro Iroc-Z: 1974 350 CMJ block swap with the tpi setup on it. I don't know if the chrome timing mark plate on the crank pulley is right. I do see the triangular indent on the pulley as the timing mark. But I can also see on the pulley itself timing marks as well so which ones would I use. I used the chrome timing plate and I checked my base timing. It was et at about 2-3 degrees btdc. I set it at 8 degrees atdc. I reconected the est connector and checked my timing. It is at 4-6 degrees atdc. Does this sound alright?

Re: Setting Timing

I'm not completely sure what you're really asking; but I'll start here.
I don't know if the chrome timing mark plate on the crank pulley is right.
You might as well have stopped posting right there.

Given that, all of those numbers and everything else that comes after that statement, have no meaning.

Until you locate TDC by some means other than the "timing marks", such as a piston stop, all "measurements" made by way of it are about like measuring distance with a ruler whose numbers are in a random order.

If you have the stock crank damper and some "chrome" timing tab, your indication is 30-some-odd degrees off. That much is known for certain. So if you have that combination of parts and your indication is as you say, it's TOTALLY wacked.
