flywheel help
My starter grinded off some of the teeth on my flywheel and am in need of a new one. My problem is that my car is an 85 and My engine is an 87 350 with a 1 piece rear main seal. Do any of u know what year camaro came with a one piece rear main since the people at autozone seem to have no idea and well i don't either
thanx for your help i can't wait to get this car back on the road and finally getting this damn engine broken in

'86-up had one-piece rear main seal. 153-tooth, ~12-3/4" diameter. If you specify '87 Camaro 350, that'll be the piece you need.
Do you need a flywheel (manual transmission), or flexplate (automatic transmission)? 350 Camaros didn't have manual transmissions, so just ask for the 305 flywheel if you have a manual transmission.
Well, the 305 flexplate would be the right piece, too.

Re: flywheel help
Yup, all you need is the flywheel for 83-85 Camaro/Firebird V8 T-5. Note that there are 4 specs: 83-85, Camaro/Firebird, V8, T-5. Any flywheel that meets those 4 specs, will work.
Don't get all hung up on tooth count, "internal balance", or any of that. Too much work. Screw a bunch of work. Just refer to the 4 specs.
You will find that there are 2 such flywheels. The difference is the weight. One is about 16 lbs and came on the performance cars (L69); the other is about 22 lbs and came on the cars with the grocery-cart drivetrain (LG4). The heavy one allows the under-powered and under-geared motor to disturb the car from a dead stop without killing the motor. If you have the better motor, or you have the weak one but have fixed either the lack of power or the stupid 2 series gear, then the lighter one is probably the one you want.

Since they have a core charge, they must be remanufactured units. I'd want to know if they've been magnafluxed.
Buying a new one makes a lot of sense to me. For one thing, they might not take your 2-piece flywheel for the core.

Re: flywheel help
His engine is an '87. He'll need '86-'92 Camaro/Firebird V8 T5
Right....
I guess my brain musta got a cramp right then.
So yeah, 86-92, not 83-85; and the engines in question would be the Lb9 vs the LG4 or L03.

Re: flywheel help
If its just the ring gear and your existing flywheel is fine otherwise (I dont know the answer to that), you could replace the ring gear yourself with a hammer, a cold chisel and a torch. Pop the existing one off with the hammer and chisel, and heat the new one up with the torch and drop it on there. Just dont use your hands to hold it

Re: flywheel help
hahahahahaha well it looked like there was a little damage to both and not using your hands to hold it is easier said then done
i know i've burned my hands several times knowing not to touch something but somehow still touched it. Well i have a powermaster 9600 so i ordered the starter replacement pinion gears http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p?part=PWM-604 so first i'll see if this will get it started if not i'll replace flywheel as well
