Re: ran out of gas...

It sounds like all the sediment and crap that used to be in the bottom of your gas tank is now in your fuel filter. Check that out first, it might be a cheap fix!

Re: ran out of gas...

Running it out of gas is very hard on electric fuel pumps, because they use the fuel in the tank for cooling. No fuel (none being less than 1/8 tank) means no cooling. Its very easy to fry a pump that way. Check your fuel pressure, and make sure its adequate. Should be at or above 40psi for a TPI car, or at/above 10psi for a TBI car.

Change your fuel filter too. Picking up all the junk at the bottom of the tank causing the problems isn't anywhere near as common as people think, but its cheap and its probably due anyway if it hasn't been done recently.

Re: ran out of gas...

Yeah, the fuel actually passes through the inside the motor and around the rotor to cool it as well as lubricate the bushings. If the pickup is exposed and you try to start the car multiple times, it can damage the pump.

Re: ran out of gas...

it already has a brand new filter maybe has had half a tank run through it... could it not be giving enough pressure even though its still priming? looks like i might have to rob my parts car of its pump

Re: ran out of gas...

It not pump gas. That sucks because its located in the gas tank. Your going to have to drop the whole rear to get to it. Thank gm for that one
