I have a new 82 Camaro CFI (save it, I am building a 383 for it) that I just bought and am trying to fix a few issues. First the car smokes mostly on statup but a little after warm up also. Mostly I am concerned because the smoke smells real strong. Like normal exhaust just stronger ( best I can explain it. It will give you a headache standing next to the car for a few minutes). Also the car ideals real fast on start up (like 1800 sometimes) for a few minutes then slowly goes down to about 100. And here is my second problem. When the idle comes down after warm up it gets rough. Like its trying to get down to the 500 mark but then shoots back to 1000 for a few seconds then repeats it. Last problem is a ticking sound under the passenger foot area (close as I can tell). It sounds like a exhaust leak and I found a loose bolt on the manifold but it did not fix it.

Oh by the way the guy gave me a recipt for haveing the motor rebuilt about 20,000 ago. This guy gave me a hole 4 inch thick file of reciepts dating back to 1982.

Any help would be great.

 

What color is the smoke when you first start the car?

 

Brownish I would say.

 

When the guy did his rebuild, did he have the valve-guide seals replaced?

If the smoke is dark and on startup, in my experience it is typically valve-guide seals that are worn-out.
