You could probably get there with just exhaust mods and other odds and ends, and maybe a different cam like the LT1 or similar. Should be good for around 250 at the crank with a different cam and exhaust.

If you are planning on doing some minor mods, you might as well spend the extra and do a few major mods while you are at it.. Doesn't take as much $$$$ to build up a GM ~VS~ a ford or mapop... LOL

Re: 92 firebird TBI garbage?
First, you need a full exhaust system replacement. Everything from the cylinder heads back - including the cylinder heads! You have the worst late model 305 heads, the worst sbc exhaust manifolds in history, and the worst y-pipe.
The light at the end of this tunnel is that you would replace that stuff anyway if you go carb! So? Why not do it first?
Next, instead of spending your hard earned money on a new carb, intake, and distributor to eliminate your fuel injection, buy a used laptop and then start tuning. Start cruising the DIY PROM section and buy the tuner pro stuff that you need to get the job done. You can make TBI support anything that a carb system can do. And, it's not really more expensive if you do the work yourself.
Good luck, whatever you do!
Oh, and replace those gears! Go 3.42s if it's your daily driver to work car and 3.73's if it's just a fun cruiser.

wait i have another idea. seriously...the bird isnt gonna be that fast. maybe you could make this thing as nice as possible, then sell, and buy an lt1 4th gen or maybe a 3rd gen w/ a 350. to me, the 305 isnt really worth it except for a beater. its got the power of a 6 cylinder and the gas mileage of a v8. or go with a swap. gen 3 small blocks similar to the ls1(5.3, 4.8, 6.0) are fairly cheap, and in abundance. and theres lots of people jumping on the gen 3 bandwagon so there will be plenty of help out there
