383 fuel mileage

I'm working on a carbed 383 (following a 475hp buildup) for my 86 camaro, it will have 3.55 rear gears, and a 700r4 that I hope will last untill I can get a good t5 or t56. the car unfortunately has to be my daily driver for a while and I was wondering what others with 383's are getting for mileage during normal driving? Thanks.

Re: 383 fuel mileage

A carbed 475HP 383 won't get good mileage no matter what you do but a lot of it is how you drive it. If you keep your foot out of it it won't be too bad but if you drive it hard you can almost watch the gas gauge go down. Exact mileage is hard to say without cam specs, carb type ect. but I would guess you will be doing good to get 12-14 mpg on the highway and 6-10 city driving if your combo is really 475HP. With my old combo of 750DP carb, 10:1 383, 225/230 .525/.525 hyd roller cam, TH-350, 3500 stall, 3.73 gears I used to be able to get a max of 12mpg on the highway if I drove the speed limit.

wow, I figured at least 16mpg. Thanks for the info. as for the build I'm hoping for at least 430hp, i"m always pesimistic about advertised numbers.

Re: 383 fuel mileage

I get about um lets see... 2-3 miles between fuel stops, of about 5 gallons, so we will average that to 2 miles per gallon. It does make about 900 hp though lol
