Where can I get a 180 degree crank? Would it make a difference in performance? How much do they cost on average? Thanks for the help...

A "flat" crank- rod journals 180 deg. apart. Anyplace that makes billet cranks can make you one for about $3000, and you'll need the cam custom ground to match. You'll have better throttle response and that's about the only gain you'll see. It will run rough in the lower rpm ranges, like under 5000, and it will sound like a V6. Might see a miniscule increase in horsepower if the motor makes power up around 8000 rpm. Not really applicable to big american V8's.

 

oh, I figured that's what he meant, but I never even heard of people doing that. A completely custom firing order and whatnot eh? Weird...

You just like stuff that is measured in angles don't you? Admit it !

Another one i've never heard of... However, equal length long tube "tuned" headers help scavenging, that's what i've heard. That's compared to basic tubular short or long tube headers. Actually I think a lot of the good long tube headers are "tuned", ie equal length tubes.
Those are actually within price range too, normal people buy that.

 

They do but the gains are very slight and only really noticeable on engines that operate within a very narrow rpm range. On a 180 header one primary tube from each side is connected to the collector on the opposite side. There really isn't room to do it properly on most production/street cars, and certainly not in a 3rd gen. They too will make it sound like a V6. They are most often used in tube frame race cars that have a lot of room around the engine, and no provisions for a passenger in one side of the car. A "crossover" header for a circle track car is a good example-some of which are 180deg type and some are not.

 

I guess I do...I am not too worried about price range, since It am gonna buy all the parts over time and stuff...but I do know about the tuned full length headers and stuff, but I dont remember where I read it or saw it or heard about it, but it said the a "flat" crank would help, if not 180 degree headers would work too, to better the scavenging effet of a v8... but again everything I could find was extremely vague...

As to the 180 degree headers, yes they do help scavange,
but with a few drawbacks
Very peaky within a small rpm band based on engine setup.
Primarys cross sides as to firing order-scavanging next
exhaust pulse.
Bundle of snakes tubing setup-Race car stuff-Never work
on any of our cars or any street cars.
Indy,Cart, Formula stuff where they run the motors within
a narrow band for most hp and torque.
Alot of primary size,length,collector ect tuning and testing.

Believe a few Nascar teams tried them a few years back,
The CAT car comes to mind, and remember when they came by the grandstands definately made a howl behind
a 750-800hp chevy sb.
