Knocking while cranking

Knocking while cranking
I just picked up and installed a 350. When cranking the motor over with the starter, I have a loud knock every 2 or 3 seconds. My question is if you can hear a rod knock while cranking without the car started? If not, my other theory is that there could be something in one of the cylinders and the piston is smacking it against the head.
Any help would be appreciated

Not the starter. I started it up for like a second and it still knocks but obviously alot faster
