tried to buy a new flywheel today. they asked a bunch of questions and i only got as far as 153 tooth , but didn't know anything about balance.

Just get a flywheel for the year of the engine. Don't worry yourself over "internal" or "external" balance, because there are issues with definitions there, and even if I explain that your 305 is internally balanced, the presence of a weight (on the flexplate, at least - you have an automatic or manual transmission?) will just confuse the issue.
'86-up = one-piece rear main seal, 153-tooth flexplate/flywheel.
'85-earlier = two-piece rear main seal, 153-tooth flexplate/flywheel.
