Valve Breather, EGR + A.I.R.

I have a couple of questions and did not know where to post so I figured I would post them all in this thread.

I want to remove the EGR and A.I.R. Are there any guides on how to do this? Do I need to do anything special such as have a new chip burned for the computer or what. I have an EGR block for the intake manifold that my buddy gave to me.

I am not at all worried about emissions testing. I uploaded a picture to show everything I am talking about it is my car's engine bay and I circled a few things. I also wanted to know what I should use to remove surface rust.

Cliff Notes:
-Remove surface rust on block
-Remove EGR
-Remove A.I.R.
-Valve Breather? (I don't know what it is going into the valve cover on the driver side or if I can put a valve breather in it like other cars.)

Re: Valve Breather, EGR + A.I.R.

Why do you want to remove the EGR? And yes, if you have a computer controlled car, you will need to burn a chip that omits it, else, the SEL will be on constantly.

AIR Injection: This can be dumped with no loss of drivability. Cleans up the engine compartment fairly well, and makes things easier to work on. Removing the pump will require a shorter serpentine belt. Keep in mind, this things purpose is to lite off the cat fairly quickly, so, you might end up with a clogged cat at some point, or, you may not....

Rust Removal. Probably some WD-40, or PB Blaster would remove it without too much trouble, prolly have to scrub it a bit. Fine mesh steel wool? Brillo Pads? If you don't IMMEDIATELY coat it with something, paint, whathaveyou, it will be rusted again in less than a day......

That is indeed a pcv breather. Interesting setup. Must have put a filter on there when they disposed of the original air cleaner. Leave that system in place, or, plumb that line to the bottom of the air cleaner. Might be a port for it there already. Or not.......

I changed the filter and that was there before

Re: Valve Breather, EGR + A.I.R.

I want to remove EGR to clean up the engine bay. I don't want things that I do not neccessarily need. Now if I remove the A.I.R. system could I hollow out the cat to prevent problems in the future or what? Also what can I do about the PCV valve if it's purpose is to make sure the engine does not blow up how come other people have a valve breather there instead? If I put one there could it hurt?

Re: Valve Breather, EGR + A.I.R.

yes you could "hollow" out a cat. The PVC stays though. whether you use a seprate "on top valve cover" filter or the type that goes into the air cleaner you need it. The EGR can be blocked off. The thing is after thousands of miles you get build up in your heads, carbon and such. I did it on an older El Camino and felt no real improvemnet. I did however have build up in the heads after 2K miles ( i was running rich too though)

It is possible if you have just a carb system to do this very easily but the ECM makes it harder. And from personal experience it did make a big difference in power in my 84 but i spent countless hours converting to an old quadrajet and old HEI system. Also gutting the computer and smog stuff. I filled a big garbage can up twice with wires alone. But with a fuel injected car........ IMO not worth it. If you want majic power then use NOS.

Re: Valve Breather, EGR + A.I.R.

I just want a clean, nice looking, and easy to work with engine bay. The PCV valve I can just put a valve breather there and it will be fine?

Re: Valve Breather, EGR + A.I.R.

well yes and no. You can get one that looks like a normal one with a line that still comes out. the thing is you need the check "valve". on the other hand the one on the passanger side that goes in the air cleaner can be a nornal press on breather. no biggie. You need vacum on the drivers side to keep crap out of your oil. heck some people run two. It's a relaibility thing. Just run one.

If I just remove the A.I.R. for now I will have no problems basically? What sized belt do I need if I have all the pumps and just remove that one.
