need help setting the base timming

hey guys i need some help setting the timming on my 87 gta transam the guage on the block that is suppose to show you the degrees of timming is un readable, from the big indention on the guage which i suppose is suppose to be o degrees what are the increments for each notch or do you go by where the saw tooth looking part is pointing to, and also when i disconnect the advance connector the engine dies i can keep it running by throttleing it up to about 1200 rpm but i shouldn't have to do this right? any help would be great thanks

Re: need help setting the base timming

my 0* mark is on the driver side of the scale (if im wrong dont kill me) but i know my 0* is at either end of the scale, is yours just dirty or something? if it is just get a coat hanger or something long and put a rag on the end, spray your gauge with some brake cleaner and wipe it off
