Engine drops to 500rpm when slowing down

Ok, so I have a few problems. My distributor cap is currently held on by zip ties because the last moron who replaced my distributor overtightened and stripped the threads on it. So it's possible water may have made it's way inside. The other problem is my car sat for two months and was started twice, and when I got back from overseas, the egr would throw a code when I got up to about 70 for a while and slowed down. I am checking my distributor cap today, but my question is this. My egr isn't throwing codes anymore, could it still be malfunctioning? My engine drops to 500 rpms when I slow down, but only when the weather is warmer. When it's near or below freezing, I rarely get the problem, but when it warms up, it happens almost every time I slow down. And the other day I was re-gluing the rear view mirror button, and I had the car idling to warm up the windshield. Every time the heater would kick on (does the compressor have anything to do with this?) the engine would drop to 500rpm and catch itself. So is this an egr problem?
And anyone else had the stripped threads on the distributor problem? I was thinking about just using little nuts to tighten it down, or maybe cotter pins or something, I just replaced the distributor a year ago.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
