Re: stupid smog pump

rmeoving any of the equipment will not noticeably increase power and there really is no need to remove any

save yourself unneeded work

these vehicles are emssions tuned, lean jetted carbs, computer controlled timing and injection, and so on

and the AIR(smog) system has no effect on performance at all it simply injects fresh air into the exh manifolds to completely burn fuel that didnt burn completely inside the chambers, there is no reason at all to remove this unless it is so far damaged that it cnd that it cannot be repaired

removing it will not increase your power whatsoever

modifying in order to increase fuel and air into the engine is how to increase power in an internal combustion engine

chip burning
higher fuel delivery

ported intakes
larger valves and camshaft
larger exhaust as well
higher RPM(higher stall covnerter, deeper axle and trans ratios

and so on

I agree, the only power loss from air injection is the effort it takes to turn the pump. And if you've ever turned one by hand, you'll know that it's very easy to turn. Oh and maybe 5 or so pounds of extra weight.

The biggest reason that people remove emissions equipment (besides those that mistakenly believe that 20 HP will magically appear in it's place) is for aesthetic reasons. An uncluttered engine compartment that looks more like "race" than "stock" and makes working on the engine easier. As far as the difference in HP between an idler and an air pump that has the piping removed, there is none.
The catalytic converter is another story. It's part of the restrictive factory exhaust and is the first thing that should be changed.
If you're out to reduce the accessory load and your car has electric fans, you can free up 4-5 HP by "sleeping" the alternator at WOT, turning it into an idler only at WOT. That's only a $4 switch and some wiring.
