oil sending unit trouble
I know I'm probably going to feel stupid for posting this question, but once again I'm at a stand-still. 1992 Firebird GTA 5.7 350. My oil pressure gauge started reading 0 and after searching the forums here found that I should replace my oil sending unit. No problem, went over to the local parts store and picked one up along with everything needed for an oil change.
Drained the oil, took off the filter. On to the sending unit.
I had picked up a deep socket to take the old one off, however found that I could not fit it on due to the length of the sending unit and the limited space between the end and the bottom of the cabin. I had to take it off by using plyers to grip it and twist it until it came apart. The part that screws into the space above the oil filter was undamaged, and without the rest of the sensor I was able to remove it with no trouble with the socket.
Now I'm trying to put the new one on. It's a bit smaller around than the old one but just as long. For one, there's no way a socket is going to fit on there because the thing is just too long, and scrapes against the bottom of the cabin while even trying to fit it in. Secondly, it won't start screwing in. I've tried for 4 straight hours trying, it just won't start in the hole. I tried the old one, the one I pulled out of there, it doesn't want to start either, although after some messing with it, it'll start.
My question is....has anyone else had this kind of problem? What am I doing wrong here? With such a confied space there's no way a socket is going to fit over this, much less a socket and rachet. Did the parts store sell me the wrong one? I thought these were supposed to be easy to replace? Thanks for any advice here.

Re: oil sending unit trouble
well i had a problem similair to this once. did you compare the old sender to the new? make sur they are the same diameter and thread. if not remember you can get an adapter to fit your sending unit to the block or vica versa, yes you cant really fit a socket up there. you can (i did) get a wrench and tighten it. be sure to use teflon tape or thread sealent, good luck patience is key!!!!
