Fuel Gauge

I have a 1982 Camaro, the fuel gauge is stock 5" I am replacing the stock gauges with Autometer. My question is the stock gauge is probably mechanical. Can I install an electric one without having to drop the tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

I've never seen a mechanical fuel gauge. They are all electrical as far as I know. Most GM sensors are 0-90 ohms.
