Can't make up my mind about a Cam

Hey everyone,

I'm about a month away from having my car in the shop (they're booked until mid-late april), and having my 305 rebuilt in my 84 T/A. I am not planning on anything totally insane, but here is what I want to have done.

After checking the block, honing the cylinders and installing the new rotating assembly... stock size, I'm not planning on stroking it (at this time unless some one convinces me otherwise), , keeping it around 9:1 compression or as close as I can get, and finally I am planning on installing a set of L31 Vortec heads, associated new vortec intake and a new cam. The problem is, I can't decide on the cam. I've pretty much narrowed it down to one of the following two Voodoo Cams.

Voodoo Cam 60100

Or this one

Voodoo Cam 60101

Any of you out there have any input on these specifically or more generally how they'll work with my build? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

IM gonna go ahead and start it, though I wont be the last to say it. Go to the junkyard and get a 350 block and have them rebuild it. It wont cost any more, in fact, maybe less, as the 350 parts are more plentiful. If you install vortecs without milling the **** out of them you will have horrible compression, unless you use domed pistons. DOmes are not a good choice IMO for lots of reasons. Detonaion and flame front travel being at the top.

LOL yeah, I've heard that alot. I just like the idea of "Damn, that thing is fast...what's in it?" And I say "305...".

Well, I need to change the CPU if I go with the 350 which is why I discounted it in the first place, that and I really sort of like the idea of building the 305 after seeing what mw66nova did to his 305. Yes, the vortec's will take some milling... something like .30 to get the compression up to about 9:1 or so... However...I'll look into the 350 again....that keeps coming up whenever I ask about it.

Still..to the question at hand, 305 or 350...which cam will work or is better for what I"m trying to do?

With the 350 the only new part will be the block. You can reuse the rest of the parts as you will be buying new pistons and rings anyways along with the rest of the rebuild parts. Between the cams probably the 2nd one. Especially if you are considering a 350.

I actually went with a 60121 Voodoo cam from Summit. It's waiting now at the shop for the rotating assembly to get balanced.

you cant flat mill .300 off of a head.... it just isnt going to happen.... and it will take more than a set of vortecs and that cam to make anybody impressed by a 305...

Not and have the intake bolt onto it and not leak.
If you were going to reuse the crank and rods, I'd say build the 305. A 350 block would cost about $50. 50 more horsepower for $50 is the bargain of the century.
For the same power level, a 350 can be built to a lower "state of tune" (lower C/R, less duration on the cam) and would be better on the street than a souped-up 305.
p.s. you can still tell them it's a 305 and show them your VIN.
