My dizzy hold down bolt for my 1990 3.1 EFI seems to take a 5/8" wrench or maybe it's metric screw. Where is a good place to buy a distributor wrench for this car? If it's metric, then what size is it ?

 

its a 15 mm. get it at any parts store, later jimmy

mine is a 14mm just buy some metric tools you will run into mostly metric fasteners on these cars.

 

Yep, it's metric. Can't remember if it's 14 or 15mm. The most damnable distributor wrench in the world to find. Ended up breaking down an buying one from Mac Tools or Snap-on. Used it twice. Gathers dust the rest of the time.

 

I work for a parts store (Oreilly Auto Parts) and I had to actually special order the distributor wrench. I checked all the parts stores in town and it was all the same story. Not exactly a common size. Reminds me of the good old Quad4 in my Beretta GTZ, nothing on that car is common.

 

I ran into the same problem on my 87 w/ 2.8. I went to the parts store and bought an el cheapo wrench. Took it home fired up the o/a torch and bent it. Works like a charm, 3 dollars.

 

You can reach it with a regular wrench from the driver side, going in between the coil and distributor.

 

i jsut bought a cheapo from checker, p.o.s but it does the job, cost me like 3 bucks

 

I heated up a regular box end and bent it, then hold the other end with vice grips to use it.

 

cant say i havent had to warp some of my tools to do odd jobs, but i let them cool and keep them lol, sucks when you open your box and relaize you bent 2+ of the same size tool lol

 

As long as you bent them in different ways. You should try working on forklifts for a living.
We invented close quarters. I have a nice selection of "the purple&blue" wrenches. One saves me 1.5 hours every time I take it out.
Here's the formula: Torch + $4wrench = $25 special tool.

 

I've always found it pretty easy to just use a long extension with a 9/16 swivel socket on the end.
