Tempermental Alternator

In my 87 Iroc-Z my cars voltage meter will some times fluctuate way down and back to normal quite often. This started happening after I installed a new alternator because my other one died on me. I wouldnt be concerned if the gauge was wrong but when the gauge drops low my lights dim alot and it pisses me off. What could this be?

New alternator, or reman? Big difference. A lot of people dont realize it, but those of us who play this game professionaly do. A reman is simply a USED alternator that they took apart and cleaned. They replace anything that is bad. Not worn, bad. I have seen remans with original bearings, etc. Starters with armatures that are grooved and stuff. Its not pretty. In my professional experience, I have seen way too many remans bad out of the box. In fact at work if its non-toyota, I wont even accept a parts store reman, I demand OEM.

Aside, check all connections. if connections are good, check your running voltage. Should be higher than battery voltage. Autozone tests arent bad, if the guy knows how to use the equipment. May want to just have it tested, on car.

Re: Tempermental Alternator

I had an 86 Lincoln Town Car and I actually took the valve that controls the airflow coming from the smog pump out and replaced it with 1/2 inch PVC tee with 1'' of PVC glued into each end of it so it was constantly pushing air into the exhaust and in doing so i actually had to idle the engine down and i ended up getting more HP, torque, and better gas mileage then i would have gotten by taking out the smog pump completely just by using $3.00 worth of plumbing parts for a hardware store and it only took me about 10 minutes to do it

Must be WAY too easy to get an account setup from a google search link these days. That's absolutely ABSURD.
