help with engine build
Have some questions about my build. My 87 TA had a 4bbl 305 and im replacing it with a TBI 350. The engine is from an 89 chevy truck. I plan to get headers, delete emissions(AIR, cat etc), get new cam, and maybe new intake. Also, i have an auto trans and im going to buy a rebuild kit. So here are my questions
(keep in mind that i dont care about being street legal or passing emissions)
1 What cam should i get? The heads are stock on the 350, and i want to use the car for daily driving and street racing. i dont care about gas milage, i just want to beat up on some mustangs on a fri/sat night. What would be the best cam to get to achieve good acceleration? since i want to street race, top speed isnt really important. the whole lift and duration kind of confuses me, and i heard you need to take into consideration comp ratio but i dont know it. i just want a cam setup that will give me a lot of power but can be used on the street
2. what would be the best headers to get to give me a good hp gain? im looking to spend around 200-300 bucks.
3 should i keep the TBI or go to a nice 4 barrel setup? Our original plan was to go with a carb and get rid of the computer and emissions crap leaving just a motor, but would i get more power with the TBI or with the carb? again i dont care about gas milage just horses.
the whole plan for the car is to get some decent power on a budget. i have enough to get things like headers, rebuild kit, cam, etc but i dont want to go crazy. with your suggestions what kind of hp can i expect? sorry its so long but i dont want to build a bad combo and have a weak engine. thanks in advance

Re: help with engine build
Lose the TBI If you are going to change the cam. The truck engine has hydraulic flat tabet cam in it but is set up for a hydraulic roller cam. you will gain a little power with roller but it will cost a little more. For a flat tappet I would run a Xtreme Energy XE268H Hydraulic Flat Tappet from comp cams. I have several friends that run this cam and love it. For a roller I would run a Xtreme Energy XR282HR Hydraulic Roller Camshaft.

thanks. if i use the Xtreme energy Flat tappet, will the stock lifters/valve springs/timing chain and gears work or do I need to upgrade those as well.
Also, what is a good carb to go with? And what size?

You should always use new flat tappet lifters on a new cam shaft. I would upgrade the valve springs also. With this cam Z28 springs will be fine and save you some money. Qjet is my choice.
