Roller Cam Choices..can't make up my mind
Hey guys
I'm running an 84 T/A that's my daily driver. I've been looking over some roller cams for the right one to put in the new motor that's going in and sadly I know next to nothing about cam tech. I've done some reading on it but I'm still confused. Could someone give me the pros/cons of the following two cams? I'm looking for one that will give me good power, yet is still mild mannered for the street and won't eat my mpg too much. I want to shoot for 9:1 compression and I am installing vortec heads. I've got 3.73 gears, hooker 2055's, and a 700R4. RIght now it's a bare 350 roller block bored .030. Anyway, here's the cams.
Lunati Choice 1
Lunati Choice 2
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You need more compression that that... mid to high 9s (9.3 - 9.8 would be the target)

Those cams are almost identical. I bet you'd never even know the difference between them.
The second has a hair more lift, and is $50 more. Might as well go for it.
Vortec heads make max power at lower timing (32*) so you are slightly safer from detonation.
Get the quench distance right.

Hmm, ok. Been doing some more research though and due to where I am, I need to have all the emissions stuff hooked up...which I think, due to my EGR, rules out the Vortecs. Seems there is a ton of work that needs to be done to keep them emissions legal using an egr.

Depends on how your car is tested....
"Hooked up" is one thing. Being fed exhaust through the castings, is something else.
I would expect that between those 2 cams, if you look at the duration at.100", .200", .300" and so on, you'd find that the Voodoo has progressively higher numbers than the other one. I think you'll also find that the shape of the lobes, especially on the closing side, is different. The published numbers might look similar, but the cams themselves more likely, aren't.

Ah, good eyes. I didn't even notice one was in the voodoo lineup. Good valve springs, and that's where i'd want to be.

I had been looking at the Voodoo flat-tappet for my 305...and then found out they made them rollers for the 350 sitting on my garage floor and that got me thinking.

No offense to the posters, but dont pick your stick from a catalog, your wasting your time and money plus will leave alot of performance on the table, call and talk to the grinder, they will have soo many profiles there is no way any catalog could list them...and if you want the best pwr and still be easier on the valvetrain than any other cam, call this place and ask to talk to Bob.
i've always ran really well with there "small" cams when compared to the typical comp junk...cant wait to get that POS in my motor out after i make a few passes for a baseline with the new gear...

Re: Roller Cam Choices..can't make up my mind
Hmm, I'll check it out though to be honest, I've got a few friends who are running lunati and absolutely love them. Both are running 350's bored .030 and have voodoo cams. I simply posted both because they are each in the area of what I'm looking for. I ran the voodoo cam I posted on a desktop dyno at the machine shop I'm looking at having do the block work. With flat-tops, 9:1 compression, stock heads with headers and exhaust as options and came up with 400ft-lbs of torque from off-idle through 5000rpm and just over 300hp with a peak of about 420ft-lbs of torque and 330hp at 5500rpm where it all starts to drop. That's exactly the range I'm looking for in my daily driver. Good power with knock you in the backseat torque.

Re: Roller Cam Choices..can't make up my mind
I'm tell'n ya, call Bullet....the guys that now own this company, well bought i years and years ago, are THE cam designers that literally put Comp, Crane, Lunati on the map, developed the dual pattern cam design, etc...why get seconds and old technology when you can go to the original guys that created all this stuff in the first place and continue to stay on top...the voodoo cams are just existing sticks relabed for advertising, old cam designs retagged/relabed to start a buzz and it's working...kinda like the saying, welcome to 2008 my freind LOL!!
