Pretty sure only the TBI cars use a buffer box.

Thats not the vss buffer. It should be a yellowish plastic box, but your car shouldn't have one. The functions of the vss buffer are built into the ECM on Tuned Port cars. I know this because I went through it with mine.
Mine's an RS, originally TBI, but when I swapped to TPI the speedo quit working. I had to bypass my buffer box to get it to work.
I would check your sensor, make sure its got a good connection, then check the wiring for any frays or what not. Then move on to your cluster.

Did the speedo quit working after you replaced the vss or was it still dead? If dead, are you sure you have the correct one installed? The only way to know for sure is to cross check the vin and vss with the GM parts dealer.
