Won't start when hot

Hi:

92 RS TBI 305 auto. When the engine gets past operating temp and is then shut off, it will re-start if I try within 10 minutes, but there is a 10-30 minute time window after that where it will not restart. After about 30 minutes, or when cold, it starts up fine. This problem started within the past year.

When trying to start within that 10-30 time window, no fuel sprays thru the injectors. Engine cranks over with no problem but obviously does not fire. Once in a while fuel will get through, and the engine will start but will only run for a few seconds. Starting fluid sometimes works, sometimes not. Once it finally makes up its mind to start, it runs fine, whether hot or cold.

Replacing the ignition module helped briefly. Replaced the injection system, from stock to a Holley 670 TBI. No change. Also replaced wires, cap, plugs, fuel filter. Newer fuel pump. Fuel pump kicks on at start. Fuses OK. No codes.

I had this identical problem on my 89 Camaro (also 305 TBI), and finally gave up on it. I also have a friend with a 91 Firebird (305 TBI) with the same exact problem. He had a complete diagnostic run which indicated a bad ground, but they were not sure that it was related.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Won't start when hot

I had the exact same problem with my 91 RS about two years ago. I took it to a friend and he said that at times, a bad (clogged) converter would eventualy make the starte too hot and "wear the starter out as well". Well, he put in a new converter WITH A HEAT SHEILD, starter and replaced the cable (positive) from battery to starter..... I've never had the problem sense.... I hope this helps!!!
