on block engine code

Where on the engine do I find the engine code? Is it still on the small pad in front of the right head? What are the codes for a 87 tpi 305 & 350. I'm asking this because the guy I got my 87 Z28 from says it's a 350, but the car vin code says LB9.

Rather than the codes, which can be machined off, look for the block casting #'s. Behind the driver's side head, and sometimes the last three digits or on the sides of the block as seen from underneath the car.

Wouldn't hurt to get the head casting #'s, either.
