Yes, you can do it yourself. Special tools are required, but they are not expensive... depending on how you do it...

No need to be sorry for being new. I hav`nt done valve seals on my Iroc yet but I did on my `74 El Camino and it was easy. The hardest part of the job is probably going to be getting the valve covers off. Do as Super42 suggested and do a search and take notes. Work up a parts list along with the tools you will need and keep on asking questions, it is the only way to learn anything. I assume your car smokes when first started and until it warms up some, is it also fouling out the spark plugs?
