harmonic balancer

Moders.. excuse the non thirdgen question--

I have a 2000 chevy C3500 pickup, with the 350 Vortec SFI in it.. has a bad harmonic balancer.

I found a few on ebay that im looking at.. what balancer years are all compatible for the vortec 350's?

Thanks!

How did it go bad? They don't usually go bad by themselves in less than 20 years.
If the outer ring has broken loose, it's usually a sign of a broken crank.
I don't know why, but when it comes to balancers, compatability reasoning takes a vacation.
Summit shows a 6", a 6.75" and an 8" to be "compatable" with that year model engine. And we know that ain't right.
Don't even start about timing pointers. They sell ones that extend all the way to the mounting surface of the pulley (one of the few dimensions that is "standard") that clearly won't work with any balancer. Then there is the 12:30 and 2:00 o'clock pointer locations...
Good luck picking one. Get one the correct OD and buy some timing tape.

Re: harmonic balancer

Just found one at autozone for $50. I bought the truck without an engine, and bought a 5.7 vortec off ebay and threw it in. It had an aftermarket chrome balancer on it, and this truck goes in the mud alot.. I took it to the shop and they told me it was the balancer, so i replaced it and everything went back to normal. The crank sensor was also bad.

Thanks alot,
John
