What can I remove and still be legal?

I am swapping my motor and just bought a set of Hooker 2055s to go on the new 350 along with Magnaflow cat w/ A.I.R. tube and Hooker cat-back.

I would like to clean up my engine bay by removing crap on the passenger side other than A/C. Can I remove my smog pump and that big black plastic box and other stuff and still pass inspection? It's only visual here. And how does the smog pump relate to the A.I.R. tubes on the headers? Are they interconnected somewhere? I'm totally new to this smog stuff and don't know how it works together.

Thanks!

yea if you have inspections then you will have to pass them to keep it on the road but if not be very afraid of the DoT officers.

Where I live, there is no inspections. Can this stuff be removed without harming performance? I too would like to remove some of that crap. In fear engine wouldn't run good...

One hint - Take good photos and diagram everything before removing any of it. Save all the parts you remove. You may need them later.

Search for "remove smog pump" or "remove AIR" and you will read the hundreds of threads with arguements on both sides. Just know its illegal to remove the smog stuff on a street car in all 50 of the United States. That's a federal law, regardless of what your state does.

BTW - As the I-80 corridor continues to grow west from Joliet, LaSalle/Peru (and Ottawa) are likely to be subject to the growing region of emissions testing. If the political climate changes to a more liberal face in November, expect it even sooner. That's why I suggested saving the parts - So you can put them back next spring. I expect the I-88 area west of Aurora to be included even sooner.
