This is also a question on how accurate my stock tach is.... I know the L98 runs out of steam after 5000 RPM. I noticed lately my motor is really winding out before it shifts. My tach says like 6500 RPM when it shifts. Is this even possible? Im running a MSD 6A box, and I thought there was a rev limiter at 6k RPM. Last summer i had the TV cable adjusted so it would shift @ 5500. Now it seems like it revs a bit too high. The motor is really screaming. I got a B&M shifter and i think im in a lower gear. I bumped it into neutral today because i thought i was in 3rd.(they should make them so you can't bump them up to N)
How many RPM does it take to hurt my motor???

That's not the way you adjust shift point on a TH700R-4 transmission.

It is the way you burn them out. They don't like to shift when they're burnt out.

when whats burnt out? The cable or tranny? I adjusted the cable a few years ago to shift at peak RPM. My stock tach said it was 5500 RPM, and i didn't feel a power loss between shifts. Whats the proper way to adjust shift point?

IIRC, tightening the cable to make it shift later isnt as bad as having it too loose and shifting early. You can adjust it a little, but not much, or the trans will burn up.

I would double check the shift cable and make sure thats its fully getting into gear. The B&M instructions cover this well.

The stock "tach" is pretty inaccurate, its probably about a 1000 off. Mine would say 7000 even though I had a 6k rpm pill.

Pull your dipstick and smell it. You'll know if its burnt. It will smell like dog ****, wont smell anything like atf.

Fluid smells okay. I think im getting spooked because my tach is showing high RPM. I also stripped out the whole interior because im going to redo everything. I got an exhaust cut-out with a 1" baffle where the cats used to be. I think since everything is louder, along with the inaccurate tach, im thinking its winding out too much........
Does the MSD 6A have a rev limiter at 6k RPM? It doesn't have pills like the 6AL, but i thought it had one built in.

No, the MSD 6A has no rev-limiter, that is why they sell the MSD 6AL, the L means limiter. The stock TPI computer has a limiter at 10,000 rpms, so its practically useless.
