88 IROC fuel issue
hey all -- really love the site and the knowledge.
I finally got back into a nice IROC.. got it for a great price.. and broke it already.
Long story short.. 88 IROC 350. The wiring under the hood is a mess.. drove it.. put in a full tank of premium. Ran fine all the way home.. untill I got there.. and it's overheating.. dual fans did not come on. Relay issue.. well the relays are all over the place.. I hot wired the fans.. and they work great. Tried to start the car.. started.. for a sec.. stuttered.. then died. then it just wouldn't start at all.. floored it.. nothing.. tried to start for awhile.. then just didn't even tease me.
I'm guessing I blew a fuel pump fuse. Question: Is there one? If so where? I don't see one in the fuse box under the steering wheel. Is it a relay? Fuseable link? Help a brother out.. really like the car.. and am excited to drive it.
thanks a million!!

check the fuse that is next to the battery. the connector should clip to the fender and have 2 wires coming out of it.

thanks.. that's the problem.. the relays and fuses are all over the place.. the harness around the battery is a mess.. would you happen to have a picture of what the fuse looks like?

Re: 88 IROC fuel issue
It should be on an orange wire, coming from the wire loom that runs down the driver side framerail. Just follow that bunch of wires towards the battery, until you find it. There is also a fusible link there, looks like a plastic sleeve thing, a few inches long. That wire is for ECM constant power, fuel pump power, and fan power. I think it takes a 30A fuse, that's what I put in mine.

thanks man.. I'll look for it.. all of the wires and relays are just flying around. Nothings where it should be. I'll replace the fuse.. preciate it. Can I wire the fans to it? I'm guessing the fuel pump is on acc power.
Also, should it be the passenger's side frame rail? The battery is on the passenger side.
thanks again

Re: 88 IROC fuel issue
okay.. checked it out.. found it.. laying near the battery.. checked the fuse.. it's good.. took the fuse out with the key on .. and when I put the fuse back in.. I could hear a ticking on the driver's side of the engine.. I ran to the back by the gas tank.. but, didn't hear anything there.
Any ideas on how to diagnose?
thanks

Re: 88 IROC fuel issue
i would think that if you hear a clicking sound coming from the drivers side then the relay is working. when you turn the key on it should click, the pump should run for two seconds, and it should click again. if you aren't hearing the fuel pump kick on then i would test it by running a wire from the positive side of the battery to the far left lower connection on the ALDL.. the pump should run. also, i believe ther is a connection under the car above the rear differential.. i would check and clean that.

Re: 88 IROC fuel issue
I appreciate the help. I'd have to believe something happened as I was hard wiring the radiator fans. It would be a wild coincidence for me to wire the fans.. and for the fuel pump to just stop working. Now, the car sat for at least 2 years.. I bought it last night. Put a battery in it and it started right up. Ran it low on gas.. put, some in from my lawnmower supply.. then went to the gas station filled er up with premium..went home.. and the rest is there.
I could almost imagine the fuel filter getting some stuff in it.. but, the fp working for 15 minutes.. the relay working for 15 minutes.. and it's not related to my fan fiddling?
Here are a few shots of what I'm dealing with under the hood. Any ideas what I'm looking at?

thanks again

Re: 88 IROC fuel issue
sorry dude.. i am pretty new to the third gen camaro myself. the reason i was able to throw out the ideas on the fuel pump is because i have been going through similar problems over the last few weeks. i too have wires everywhere near the fans.. someone butchered them and that will probably be my next project after i get the car running.
about three weeks ago i bought an 87 iroc w/ 5.0tpi (no trans.. but i am going to be putting in a 700r4), 4 wheel disc brakes, posi, and the t tops don't leak for $600. it has a crunched quarter but i think i am a decent enough body man that it won't be too big of an issue. what did you buy??

88 Iroc 5.7 ltr.. body is near perfect. Interior not bad.. engine runs.. pretty well.. -- well not right now.. but did. Shifts through all gears.. little slippery between 2 and three. Gonna be a very nice car. $1000.
