What all needs to be done to 083 head to support this cam....

I'm trying to do a heads and cam swap as cheaply as I possibly can. May be getting some L98 heads locally and I want to use this cam. Do I just need good springs, or what? What kind of power should this combo make with all proper supporting mods and custom tuning? (see sig)

you will see an improvement over you cam just a little bit though... i thought the L05s cam with LT1 cams but what ever that cam wont take much in terms of work to the heads MAYBE springs but that cam isnt far from stock and MAYBE a little clearance work on the head but you could probably do it all your self...

You're going to need to machine the guides down a bit- the lift is over the somewhat safe .470" max those heads can take in stock form.

Have them machined down, install the matching Comp 981 springs (drop-in replacements for stock- no other machining required) and put it all back together with the stock locks and retainers. Yes, even the crappy exhaust-side rotator-retainers.

If you want to go the extra mile to get rid of the exhaust side rotator-retainers and replace them with "standard" retainers like the intakes use (not really necessary for sub-5500 RPM use, in my opinion) you can do that as well, but you will also need to put a .060" shim in the exhaust spring pocket to bring the installed height back up to factory spec.

DON'T go so cheap that you talk yourself into using stock springs- you'll be giving up quite a bit of upper-RPM fun if you do. Put the 981s in.

L05 did not come with an LT1 cam. I'm pretty sure it's more like the L03 cam. A small chance it's an L98 cam which is still MUCH smaller than the cam I posted.

Manley 22410-16 springs and 23652-16 retainers will drop right in and give you .550" max lift. Change the stock valve stem seals while you're in there, and you should also get the Manley 42106-16 3/8" screw-in rocker studs. Now you see why we suggest aftermarket heads, as it costs so much to upgrade stock heads and they still suck.

Once I figured out what needed to be done I was going to price it out then compare to aftermarket....

Just a rough estimate including all the machine work I should plan about $750 including the price of the used heads to have quality L98 heads running on my motor. Sure does make aftermarket look better.
